Nieuwe search engine legt zelf verbanden.

In de Universiteitsbibliotheek in Utrecht is gisteren een zoekmachine gepresenteerd die volgens de makers slimmer is dan Google. De zoekmachine ANNH (associative neural networks for the humanities) ziet associatieve verbanden die Google niet zit. ANNH is ontwikkeld door filosofen van de Universiteit Utrecht en de Duitse softwareontwikkelaar Klaus Holthausen. Met de zoekmachine kunnen teksten bestudeerd worden.
De zoekmethode is gebaseerd op de werking van de menselijke hersenen en levert volgens de UU meer en betere resultaten dan het zoeken op exacte treffers. De zoekmachine is ook interessant voor bibliotheken en voor zoekopdrachten op internet.
De zoekmachine is gebaseerd op neurale netwerken die ook de basis vormen van de hersenen. In de hersenen zijn zenuwcellen (neuronen) met elkaar verbonden via synapsen. Op dezelfde manier zijn de onderdelen van een tekst met elkaar verbonden via de woorden in die teksten. Deze associaties zorgen voor inhoudelijk relevante resultaten. Een belangrijk verschil met al bestaande systemen om grote hoeveelheden tekst te analyseren, is dat het nieuwe systeem geen informatie vooraf nodig heeft over de te doorzoeken teksten. Het zoeksysteem bepaalt de informatiewaarde van elk woord door te kijken hoe vaak het woord voorkomt in de doorzochte teksten en met welke andere woorden het samen wordt gebruikt. Op basis daarvan maakt het systeem zelf associaties, afhankelijk van de teksten.
Een zoekopdracht kan resultaten (associaties) opleveren waarin de oorspronkelijke zoekterm helemaal niet voorkomt. Ook kan een zoekopdracht binnen één werk van een auteur heel andere resultaten opleveren dan diezelfde zoekopdracht binnen zijn gehele oeuvre.
De zoekmachine is volgens de makers een belangrijke aanwinst voor de tekst- en editiewetenschap, waar de techniek voor ontwikkeld is. Traditionele vragen uit dit vakgebied, bijvoorbeeld over de datering of het auteurschap van een tekst, kunnen nu met behulp van de computer worden beantwoord. De volledige werken van de filosofen René Descartes, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling en Immanuel Kant zijn aan het systeem toegevoegd. De onderzoekers willen de komende tijd nog veel meer teksten gaan toevoegen. De ANNH-zoekmachine is alleen toegankelijk voor mensen die over een inlogcode beschikken.

Bravo! I took the liberty of removing these as well as performing some occasional remedial cosmetic work to the background scuffs and splodges. There are doubtless errors in the Genus names in the title tags: either because I misread the handwriting or because the names have been superseded.”

Maybe, with the sheer volume of text on the Internet, it isn’t deemed as important to make books available for free to the poor and newly arrived in the East End. Art you have to visit and see, for the most part, and books you can buy, browse at bookstores or now download. Maybe part of the museum or gallery’s attraction is the social aspect — reading is solitary.

Hoe ook ik dagen, nachtenlang wakker kan liggen van hoe ik mijn boeken dien te klasseren - biografieën afzonderlijk?, alles alfabetisch?, per taalgroep? - over de vreugd van het plannen van onbetaalbare beukenhouten kasten aan alle muren, tot in het huis van de buren toe - hoe alle boeken, ongelezen, toch reeds een verhaal vasthouden - hoe ze roezemoesen en elkaar aansteken, opstoken, de grond in boren en ophemelen - hoe een boek dat al twintig (10) jaar in de kast staat plots op een dag een niet te negeren signaal kan uitzenden en verslonden dient te worden - hoe een slecht boek een ganse boekenplank besmetten kan. Maar u snapt dat van uzelf zo ook wel. Of niet, en dan is het toch verloren moeite.

David Byrne and Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today:

Brian Eno and I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years. For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It’s familiar but completely new as well. We’re pretty excited. In August the music will be available via this Web site, free for streaming and available for purchase in a variety of options that allow you to download immediately and receive physical formats when they become available later in the Fall. One of the songs will be available free of charge.

In September I will begin a tour, on which I will be playing music from the new album as well as music from our previous collaborations - 3 Talking Heads albums, Bush of Ghosts, etc. If you’d like to be updated as this story unfolds, please add your email address via the box below (we will not contact you for any reason other than to tell you about this David Byrne and Brian Eno project and the tour and we promise not to give or sell your contact to anyone else or even to the government).
