Nieuwe search engine legt zelf verbanden.

In de Universiteitsbibliotheek in Utrecht is gisteren een zoekmachine gepresenteerd die volgens de makers slimmer is dan Google. De zoekmachine ANNH (associative neural networks for the humanities) ziet associatieve verbanden die Google niet zit. ANNH is ontwikkeld door filosofen van de Universiteit Utrecht en de Duitse softwareontwikkelaar Klaus Holthausen. Met de zoekmachine kunnen teksten bestudeerd worden.
De zoekmethode is gebaseerd op de werking van de menselijke hersenen en levert volgens de UU meer en betere resultaten dan het zoeken op exacte treffers. De zoekmachine is ook interessant voor bibliotheken en voor zoekopdrachten op internet.
De zoekmachine is gebaseerd op neurale netwerken die ook de basis vormen van de hersenen. In de hersenen zijn zenuwcellen (neuronen) met elkaar verbonden via synapsen. Op dezelfde manier zijn de onderdelen van een tekst met elkaar verbonden via de woorden in die teksten. Deze associaties zorgen voor inhoudelijk relevante resultaten. Een belangrijk verschil met al bestaande systemen om grote hoeveelheden tekst te analyseren, is dat het nieuwe systeem geen informatie vooraf nodig heeft over de te doorzoeken teksten. Het zoeksysteem bepaalt de informatiewaarde van elk woord door te kijken hoe vaak het woord voorkomt in de doorzochte teksten en met welke andere woorden het samen wordt gebruikt. Op basis daarvan maakt het systeem zelf associaties, afhankelijk van de teksten.
Een zoekopdracht kan resultaten (associaties) opleveren waarin de oorspronkelijke zoekterm helemaal niet voorkomt. Ook kan een zoekopdracht binnen één werk van een auteur heel andere resultaten opleveren dan diezelfde zoekopdracht binnen zijn gehele oeuvre.
De zoekmachine is volgens de makers een belangrijke aanwinst voor de tekst- en editiewetenschap, waar de techniek voor ontwikkeld is. Traditionele vragen uit dit vakgebied, bijvoorbeeld over de datering of het auteurschap van een tekst, kunnen nu met behulp van de computer worden beantwoord. De volledige werken van de filosofen René Descartes, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling en Immanuel Kant zijn aan het systeem toegevoegd. De onderzoekers willen de komende tijd nog veel meer teksten gaan toevoegen. De ANNH-zoekmachine is alleen toegankelijk voor mensen die over een inlogcode beschikken.

Maybe, with the sheer volume of text on the Internet, it isn’t deemed as important to make books available for free to the poor and newly arrived in the East End.
